A CALL TO ARMIN

Armin van Buuren looks to Ushuaia for his 'A State of Trance' residency...

Past years have seen the Dutch trance favourite choose Space and Privilege for his residencies, but this year his decision to join forces with Ibiza's iconic poolside arena shows yet more tilt in booking power on the island.

Starting life as a modest beach bar in Playa den Bossa, the move to develop the club's strip into luxury accommodation set in motion steps that would redefine the island as we know it. Bringing back al fresco clubbing to Ibiza at a time when it was severely missing, Ushuaia stands as an embodiment of where we are today — a circuit where VIP culture and underground clubbing go hand-in-hand.

Armin's choice to move from the island's biggest club to its most extravagant only serves to reflect the ever increasing appeal of this world-beating venue, which knocked on the door of the Top 10 of our Top 100 Clubs poll earlier on this year, rising 17 places to number 11. Its displacement of Loco Dice's Used + Abused is another sign of Ushuaia's slight departure from more understated forms of house and techno.

Launching on Thursday 26th June and with listings to be announced, Armin will be joined by two guest DJs each week throughout the summer. But, if last year's series at Privilege is anything to go by — featuring the likes of Cosmic Gate, Orjan Nilsen, Aly & Fila and Dash Berlin — A State of Trance is unlikely to disappoint the purists.
