HIGH FIVE: AUGUST

We give you five of this month's top nights

SUMMER IN THE CITY, TOBACCO DOCK, LONDON
SATURDAY 9TH AUGUST
GROOVE ARMADA (DJ), DJ SNEAK, LEE FOSS, WAZE & ODYSSEY, ANJA SCHNEIDER, DAMIAN LAZARUS, METRO AREA, MATHEW JONSON (LIVE), DINKY, SUBB-AN, SIS, CLIVE HENRY, KATE SIMKO, KRANKBROTHER, ENZO TEDESCHI

With the excitement of Glastonbury dying down and two of the big three London dance festivals out the way, clubbers in the capital are looking for their next fix (until SW4, of course).

Aside from SW4, Lovebox and Field Day, big scale one-day dance events in London are surprisingly rare. Studio 388 may have brought the outdoor terrace back to the Big Smoke with events like Sankeys, Cocoon, Crew Love and Krankbrother — and decent club nights are everywhere! — but proper pure dance all-dayers, those events that fall down the cracks between “big club night” and “festival” (the Circoloco in the Arenas and Cocoon in the Parks you find up north) don't often feature inside the English capital, sadly. Very much down to difficulty getting a permit and restrictions on the sound — aside from the aforementioned dates in more central locations like Victoria Park and Clapham Common — big outdoor parties tend to take place on the outskirts of the city centre so as not to disturb too many sour-faced old fogies.

Luckily, London Warehouse Events (LWE) have found a (very) decent spot in the Big Smoke, quite fittingly named the Tobacco Dock — it must be written in the stars... or something.

Debuting on New Year's Day with a size 12 shoe of an event featuring Seth Troxler, Maceo Plex and Heidi, they return this month with Summer in the City. Spread over three rooms — hosted by LWE, Crosstown Rebels and Percolate — and running from midday to 10.30pm, this micro-dance fest is located in a Grade 1 listed warehouse constructed in 1811 to store tobacco and now with a soon-to-be-unveiled space, The Vaults, situated in the Docklands area of East London.

With Groove Armada DJing alongside DJ Sneak, Lee Foss, Waze & Odyssey, Anja Schneider, Damian Lazarus and Metro Area — the list continues — on the bill, it's going to be smokin'!

FIELDTRIP, YORKSHIRE MOORS, LEEDS
15TH – 17TH AUGUST
TODD TERRY, DUB PISTOLS (LIVE), BODDIKA, BEN UFO, DARIUS SYROSSIAN, LEVON VINCENT, PROSUMER, SIDNEY CHARLES, TAMA SUMO, EDU IMBERNON, TIM GREEN, GILES SMITH, JAMES PRIESTLEY, FRANCIS INFERNO ORCHESTRA, MO KOLOURS (LIVE) & MORE

To paraphrase Mr C (Watch here), kids grow up and go from wanting a beer to eventually enjoying a fine claret. It's an analogy that can be applied not only to young people loving EDM but to Danny Savage. Coming a long way from his days promoting Filth at Mint Club and Pacha London and all the “dirty house” that came with it — Bart B More, Wally Lopez and Lee Mortimer et al — in recent years he's switched his attention to more refined forms of house and techno... and Fieldtrip is the culmination. Taking over an ever-so-English field in the Yorkshire Moors for three days in August, he's invited a load of Panorama Bar and modern day DJ greats like Ben UFO and Levon Vincent for a glass of real cider in the British countryside — in between larking about in a WW2 tank and infiltrating local elections, that is. And that's about as mature as we like to get.

RAMM, VOX WAREHOUSE, LEEDS

SUNDAY 24TH AUGUST
CLAUDE VONSTROKE, JOSH BUTLER, FILTHY RICH, MATT FEAR

When it comes to big one-off dance events, Leeds is always a reliable spot. Hailed as their biggest yet, the Vox's next party with the Dirtybird boss comes off the back of a recent string of high profile events. Propped up by local favourites Audiojack and upcoming tech house star Josh Butler, Ramm — not to be mistaken for Andy C's label/party of the same name — is without doubt going to be rammed. Filthy Rich, Matt Fear and many more can also be found on a bill lasting from 9pm until sunrise.

JACKMASTER RESIDENCY, XOYO, LONDON
SATURDAY 9TH AUGUST
JACKMASTER, MOODYMANN, JASPER JAMES

Yes, yes, yes, we all know that 12 gigs at a club does not a resident make, but once you see past that it's impossible to deny Jackmaster's season (yes, “season” is better) at probably East London's best club should not be scoffed at. Artwork, Paul Johnson, DJ Tennis and Loefah have all joined Jack to jack so far, but our pick is undoubtedly this one. Few men in this world are truly entitled to “legendary” status, but in house music few come close to Moodymann. Detroit's enigmatic magician is on the line-up with Jasper James, who is — funnily enough — the son of Harri from Subculture, the Sub Club night that's run every Saturday night for 20 years... a real resident.

MAKE ME, CORSICA STUDIOS, LONDON
SATURDAY 2ND AUGUST
COSMIN TRG B2B EFDEMIN

Moved from Autumn St Studio to Elephant & Castle's Corsica Studios, Make Me's next instalment will see the meeting of one of Berlin's most wanted DJ tag-teams in London. After debuting at Boiler Room in 2012, Romania's Cosmin TRG and Germany's Efdemin have since appeared together at Trouw in Amsterdam, Rex Club in Paris, and this month they come to one of Europe's other most revered clubs. With room two still to be announced, make sure you make it down to Make Me.
