5 CLUBS WITH UNUSUAL HISTORIES

With Miller Genuine Draft

In these ‘Vegas’ days you could be forgiven for thinking that nightclubs were all created fresh and unique in the grounds of 5 star hotels.

However there are numerous clubs around the planet that started out as something quite different – things that you may not expect.

Here are 5 of our favourites club history tales

PACHA, IBIZA (SPAIN)
Pacha is one of the world’s most recognisable clubbing brands, and Pacha Ibiza is one of the Spanish island’s best-loved clubs. But did you know that it began life as a rural farmhouse on a deserted strip of road in Ibiza Town? According to Pacha’s own historians, goats were freely grazing around the house during the the opening night in 1973.

BERGHAIN, BERLIN (GERMANY)
One of the world’s most hedonistic (and hard to get into) clubs is Berlin’s Berghain. Famous for their marathon parties, and unforgiving techno soundtrack, the imposing building that houses the anarchy was previously a power plant. Inside there are no reflective surfaces, and almost everything is made from concrete, providing a raw and industrial feel that reflects the music.

FABRIC, LONDON (UK)
Fabric is one of London’s essential nightclub experiences. The dark rooms and exposed brick-work make for an intense clubbing experience. The venue is located opposite Smithfield Market, which is the last surviving historical meat market in Central London. The club now known as Fabric began life as a cold store for this market, where meat could be kept fresh and bought up to the market when needed.

TROUW, AMSTERDAM (HOLLAND)
One of Amsterdam’s most exciting clubbing destinations – Trouw – was carved from the giant confines of an old printing press and still retains many of the original features, giving it a wild, free party feel.

MINISTRY OF SOUND, LONDON (UK)
London’s most famous nightclub has been in South London for over two decades and – having recently survived another attempt to close it down – will hopefully remain in-situ for many years to come. What is now one of the world’s best-loved nightclubs born from a converted bus garage in Southwark.
