CLUB REVIEW: CRITICAL SOUND, BRIGHTON

Critical Sounds

This month DJ Mag rolled down to the South Coast to see one of the leading labels in drum and bass, Critical Records, at Brighton's Life Club.

Critical Sound - as the residency is called - returned to Life for it's first event of 2013 after the unfortunate cancellation of their NYD event.

Situated on Brighton's thriving seafront, with only a strip of pebbles separating it from the sea, Life Club has developed into one of the best locations in town, boasting two floors and a 600 capacity - it is now the home for fellow d&b heads Renegade Hardware.

Label boss, Kasra has curated a special line up for tonight's soiree, including Shiver & Lofty (back2back), Foreign Concept  and Randall.

As we arrive Shiver is playing back to back with Critical resident Lofty warming the room nicely with a selection of techy rollers, fresh beats and tight mixing.

We were most excited about the presence of Mac II head honcho Randall on the bill. When you see Randall's name on a flyer you have a certain expectation, and he did not disappoint. The legendary DJ played classic after classic, double dropping and teasing mixes all the way.

Foreign Concept follows Randall with a VIP-packed set of rollers, before making way for Kasra's dub plate smash-out. The duo then finished the night playing back to back, Bassline's lyrics running the mic all night long.

So if you want to get a little taste of what Critical in Brighton has to offer check out this guest mix by the bass heavy Shiver.
