DJ MAG IN CUBA

We team up with Gilles Peterson and Havana Club

New music and Cuba are two things that 6Music jock Gilles Peterson is all about bringing together.

Either working with established local artists to compile 'Havana Cultura' albums or bringing artists like Mala to the nation for a musical exchange, he's helped deliver Cuban music — traditionally a hybrid of West African rhythms and Latino music — to a far wider audience, while encouraging mutated, fresh interpretations of a sound that helped spur disco and as a result dance music as we know it.

With his most recent project — Havana Club's global remix competition 'Havana Club Cultura Mix' — now entering its final stages, the winners have been chosen by Gilles (one from Germany by Mousse T) and preparing for some time in the studio with him, Simbad and a range of local artists next week.

They'll also be an Open Mic session to find a vocalist as well as all sorts of party activities and, guess what, DJ Magazine will be on hand to report on the lot.

Watch out for tweets, web posts, video content (on djmag.com) and eventually a big feature involving interviews and general chat about the project in our August issue.

In the meantime, check out the winning entries below... see you in Havana!
