DJ Mag Podcast 71: Mr. G

Colin McBean compiles his arresting ‘Let The Music Breathe’ mix...

Mr. G is a dance music icon. Having largely flown under the radar for the vast contribution he has made to electronic music, he has long remained one of electronic music’s last true enigmas.

But last year saw Mr. G, known to the taxman as Colin McBean, have his biggest year yet, taking his high-energy live show around the world as well as hitting the DJ Mag cover to tell all.

As adept at turning his hand to the sublime broken beat of ‘One For The Headz’ as he is the emotive deep house of DJ Mag’s best track of 2016, ‘Transient’ – or the muscular tech-house on cuts like ‘Dark Thoughts? (The Afterworld)’ – he has long proven himself as one of electronic music’s most adept producers.

But alongside his love of making music, McBean is a dedicated crate digger to boot, who hits London every Thursday to pick up the week’s new releases from the likes of Phonica and Sounds of the Universe.

And his DJ Mag Podcast makes this passion for digging clear, moving effortlessly from sumptuous deep house, through jerking minimal techno to languid breaks and back again.

Speaking to DJ Mag, McBean explained that he put the mix – which he calls ‘Let The Music Breathe’ – together on a simple set up of two decks and one mixer, in order to let his selections do the talking.

Enjoy them below, as Mr. G hits the DJ Mag Podcast.
