Funkatech Records reaches 50

London-based independent bass label notches up half a century

Funkatech Records is celebrating its 50th release milestone with a bumper release from award-winning producer Far Too Loud and a raft of activity. Funkatech releases have been played by everyone from Mistajam to Skream, DJ Fresh to Jaguar Skillz, and the label has won a number of awards.

Funkatech 50, the ‘Ready To Stomp EP’ mixes up electro, drumstep and breaks tracks from Far Too Loud, reflecting Funkatech’s ethos of only releasing quality underground music. “Funkatech has been around for almost a decade now and in that time we’ve put out a wide range of sounds with a single common theme... bass!” says Funkatech head honcho Asad Raja. “There’s only one kind of music we’re passionate about, the good kind.”

Staring off in 2002 as a bedroom operation “for the love of it”, Funkatech initially made its name as a breakbeat label, and its rise was synonymous with the success of London-based duo NAPT, with both label and DJ/producer combo scooping a number of Breakspoll awards. In recent years they’ve broadened their output to include drum & bass, electro, dubstep and bass music sounds, and have brought artists such as PYRAMID, Specimen A, Ctrl-Z and Far Too Loud through – as well as NAPT, who have now started their own Red Sugar label.

One of their biggest releases was when NAPT teamed up with grime artist Bashy for ‘Make MyDay’ last year, while lately PYRAMID’s ‘Cruel’ featuring Julie Thompson has made waves in the hype jungle-breaks scene and also in dubstep (the latter as a result of the SKisM remix).

To celebrate their 50th, they’ve put together a mix showcasing some upfront new tracks from the label – mixed by DJ Cubit – that’s available to DJmag.com readers to download for free...

There’s also a drumstep track by Specimen A to download for free.
