Glitter: over 60 UK festivals aim to ban plastic glitter
Festivals are finally going green...
More than 60 UK festivals have agreed to ban plastic glitter from their events this summer in a bid to avoid damaging the local environment.
While glitter might seem like some harmless fun to get festivalgoers in the party mood, the plastic-based makeup doesn’t break down and can then be ingested by wildlife and can end up in the food chain and water.
So with that in mind, a host of festivals will ban plastic glitter from this summer — but fear not as a biodegradable alternative is already on the market and will soon replace plastic glitter at most UK festivals.
The #DrasticOnPlastic pledge, signed by over 60 independent music festivals, is a new initiative that will require festivals to be free of single-use plastics by 2021.
The list of includes popular festivals including Boomtown and Shambala and hopefully will see more UK festivals taking up the challenge of becoming greener.
“Unless you’ve been living on the moon, you’ll know the plastic problem is not going away," said Bestival's Rod Da Bank who has signed up to the initiative. "I’m very proud that the organisation we started with five members 10 years ago now boasts over 60 who have all signed up to eradicate single-use plastic in the next couple of years.
"This is exactly the sort of work the AIF [Association of Independent Festivals] needs to be doing — leading the global charge against essentially unnecessary plastic at all our festivals.”
