Graeme Sinden DJmag mix

Graeme Sinden is not your average DJmag Gotta Be Big star.

For whilst most of our GBB DJs are up and coming, and still building on their careers, Graeme already plays at the world's number one club Fabric (as voted for by 600 DJs in DJmag's Top
50 Clubs poll 2006) and for one of the
biggest dance music acts around
(Basement Jaxx).

Graeme Sinden isn't going to be big. He already is.

"I don't mind dropping 'office party tunes'," jokes Graeme.

"I don't think I'm commercial as such, but I'm a big fan of pop and play eclectic club music that makes people move."

Graeme Sinden has done an exclusive mix for DJmag, and it's probably our
most eclectic to date.

Digging it the crates for some eclectic flavas

In just one hour Sinden has managed to pack in a staggering 33 tracks, ranging from agro hip hop, to dancehall, Baltimore club music and house. Even Brazilian beats features in his cut-up set.

"People are so much more open-minded these days," reckons Graeme.

"Because of downloading and MP3 players everyone has started to appreciate more genres of music, and open their minds to other sounds.

"It makes my job as a DJ much easier."

Inside Out

Graeme Sinden is resident jock for Basement Jaxx' monthly club night Inside Out at Jamm in London.

Because the Jaxx are known for their cut-up house music that draws on a diverse range of sounds, Graeme has enjoyed a freedom behind the decks that few resident DJs experience.

"The clubbers that come to Inside Out are very open-minded, and seem to appreciate good music, regardless of genre.

"I wanted my DJmag mix to reflect this open-minded attitude, and it is typical of one of my club sets.

"It starts of with hip hop, but moves through different sounds till it gets to house."

DJ Techniques

So are there any special DJ techniques when mixing dramatically different genres together?

Graeme explains: "I cue up tunes really quickly, and then slam them into the mix suddenly – that has a big impact on the dancefloor.

"Mixing different styles isn't as technically demanding as a long-drawn out mix, but it requires speed, accuracy, and you have to know your music."
