Hot Since '82 is hotter than July
Daley Padley has always been a music junkie. “My mother has the most eclectic record collection in the world,” he tells DJ Mag. “That’s where my passion comes from, really.”
On his first day at secondary school, his teacher went around the class individually asking the kids what they wanted to be when they grew up. “When he reached me I said 'A DJ',” Daley says. “He laughed and said, 'I think you should really reconsider'.”
His brother got a Technics 1210 record deck in the late '90s, without a mixer or amp, so that the brothers had to put their ears right up to the grooves. “Sounds insane, but that’s how it started!” he declares.
Padley grew up in Barnsley in Yorkshire, scoring his first gigs in the nearby party city of Leeds, where he still lives. “Leeds is such a great city,” he says. “It’s not just the 100 club nights that go off every weekend, it’s the atmosphere and the amazing friendly people that live there.”
He started producing, putting some tracks out under his real name, and when he came up with deep disco-tech chugger 'Let It Ride' he knew he had something special. “I wasn’t expecting for it to blow like it did, but at the same time I didn’t want anyone to know it was me,” he says. He adopted the name Hot Since '82 for its release on Noir Music — but isn't it hard for something to remain hot for 30 years? “In most cases yes, but here I am,” he quips.
Follow-up 'Knee Deep In Louise' found its way to Jaymo & Andy George's Moda Black, but why does he like to make deep-ish tracks, we ask him? “I like the term deep-ish, as I'm not trying to make deep house,” he says. “I’m not trying to make anything, I'm just making what I like. I think that’s why it's so much fun right now, there’s no method at all and I know people who follow the music I make think the same. It’s a nice place to start a record, no pressure at all.”
Pete Tong deservedly made 'Knee Deep In Louise' his Essential New Tune on his influential BBC Radio 1 show recently, which he's still buzzing about, and he has releases coming soon on Get Physical, Noir Music, Moda Black and Defected. He's also remixing Friendly Fires, Shadow Child, Yousef and Russ Chimes, and is touring the hot climes of Brazil, Australia and Mexico in the next few weeks.
