Ibiza's San Antonio council will impose a 3am curfew for all clubs and bars from this summer

Ibiza’s San Antonio council has announced that it has passed a law that will force clubs and bars in the popular West End part of the town to close by 3 am.

The popular strip of bars, terraces and clubs will from this summer be designated as a Special Acoustic Protection Zone (ZPAE) which will severely limit their opening hours.

The news has been confirmed by Diario De Ibiza who spoke with San Antonio’s environmental councillor Pablo Valdes who believes a “different San Antonio is possible” after the law was passed.

Understandably, local business owners aren’t happy with the decision with Josep Tur, president of the association of West End business owners, declaring the new law the “death and ruin of the West End”.

Speaking on behalf of many British business owners in the town, Martin Makepeace said, “Young Brits will now be able to eat and drink until much later in their own towns than in San Antonio, so why would they leave the UK?"

For Valdés the law is the first significant step towards "realising that a different San Antonio is possible and that one can live and run any kind of business, but in a respectful way."

The new law isn’t completely unexpected though as local councillors revealed that noise levels in the West End were measured to be 20dB above the legal limit in 2017.

This week has seen a swathe of Ibiza club announcements for the forthcoming 2018 season with Afterlife heading to Hi Ibiza, Cream leaving Amnesia and Cocoon heading to Pacha.
