KOOL FM TURNS 23!

Original hardcore pirate reaches another milestone

The original hardcore jungle pirate radio station, Kool FM, is set to celebrate 23 years in the game next month, paying homage to the old days with a no-holds-barred rave at Warehouse LDN on Friday 19th December.

Founded by DJs Smurf and Eastman back in 1991, Kool FM provided a key outlet for the quickly developing electronic music scene of the time. As Kool's Chef explains, “The early music was a lot of bleeps mixed with four-to-the-floor house” but “by 1994 we were fully supplying London with the sound of jungle.”

Many of the genre's most recognisable DJs cut their teeth on the station, including Mampi Swift, Crissy Criss and Logan D. “Kool is the station that every jungle/drum & bass DJ/MC wanted to be part of, you had to earn your stripes to do the rounds first, then prove your worth to get on Kool,” says Chef.

Kool have cracked out the big guns for this year's birthday celebrations, with the likes of Brockie, Bryan Gee, Kane, Funky Flirt, Billy Bunter, the Ragga Twins, Det and Shabba appearing alongside a host of others — a true junglist massive!
