Beatboxer becomes artist in residence at Southbank Centre

The prestigious position of 'artist in residence' has been bestowed on gifted beatboxer Shlomo - an indication that the skill of beatboxing is receiving greater recognition as an artform than ever before. The 23-year-old hip-hop nut from Leeds with the serious beats in his larynx has been chosen as a regular fixture at London's Southbank Centre, the renowned arts institution.

Having performed with Björk and created the UK's first beatbox 'choir', he impressed Southbank artistic director Jude Kelly so much that he's been selected to curate a series of events beginning this month and continuing into 2008, with collaborations with DJ Yoda, The Swingle Singers and Seb Rochford all on the cards.

"I'm excited and honoured to be here," explained Shlomo. "I see this residency as an opportunity to challenge preconceptions of beatboxing and boost its profile as a genuinely creative art-form."
