Pula the other one!

The lowdown on Outlook and Dimensions in Croatia

Two Croatian dance events both alike in dignity... run by the same team and set at the same location for pity’s sake! What’s the difference?

Well, it’s simple. Despite taking place on the same stretch of Croatian peninsula, near the city of Pula, next to an 18th century fort during the first 10 days of September, Outlook and Dimensions each have their own unique musical slant.

Bass fanatics will already know Outlook — now in its fifth year — centred on original Jamaican soundsystem culture and all its outlandish, modern-day derivatives. Expect it noisy.

Featuring original legends — the likes of Lee Scratch Perry, Phife (Tribe Called Quest), Goldie — alongside the most ferocious heads on the bass circuit today — Friction, Kode9, Andy COutlook is the one for dub purists looking for four days of carnage in a spectacular sun-kissed setting.

Dimensions, however, entering its first year, has its sights on the more refined derivatives of house, techno and bass — everything from Chicago house to Detroit techno to European electronic soul. Focused more on the origins of the 4/4 rather than reggae roots, it’ll be a little deeper, smoother, geared towards an older crowd who prefer to sweat it out to Levon Vincent, Carl Craig (live) and Moodymann than firing gun-fingers to half-step wobbles and syncopated beats.

Despite their differences, though, each is complimentary to one another and the brave can bag a pass for both (£230+ booking fee). Offering the chance to sail, ramble and relax in rustic paradise as well as go ape-shit to some of the finest dance music around, the Outlook/Dimensions experience promises to be the ultimate getaway. Just don't wear flip-flops! Pula's rocky terrain requires serious raving dedication...
