Q&A: MARCO V

Marco V is a hard man to define by genre. Although he is probably best known for his work within trance music - particularly the development of the tech-trance sound - house and techno come pretty easily to the DJ & producer, who has been an ever present force in recent Top 100 DJs polls.

Marco V is a hard man to define by genre. Although he is probably best known for his work within trance music - particularly the development of the tech-trance sound - house and techno come pretty easily to the DJ & producer, who has been an ever present force in recent Top 100 DJs polls.

He is just about to release a new compilation entitled 'T.A.O. (The Art Of)' on Central Station Records, which demonstrates his continuing versatility. We caught up with him for a chat about the release...

Tell us about the latest TAO compilation?

It's the third edition of this mix series. I want to give the listeners a ‘Marco V in the club’ experience. It's a mix of dancefloor anthems that are doing it for me and always get a good crowd reaction.

What is the thinking behind the title? Are you shining light on the art of the DJ?

The idea of 'The Art Of' is the whole music scene in general. Dancers, video guys, decoration people, light engineers, DJs etc. So everyone can fill it in the way they like it.

It is not strictly a trance album. Would you say your sound is more diverse now?

I wouldn't say my sound is more diverse now, I never sticked to one style of music. Years ago my music was mainly techno beats with trancey influences and melodies. Nowadays the techno beats made place for housey and tribal elements with trancey melodies.  And with a change of beats, the BPM became slower as well.

How did you go about choosing the tracks and artists to feature?

I didn't care about the songs being old or new, just searched for the tracks that really work in my sets and will be for a longer time.

And you plan to tour the album later this year. Where are you headed?

Yes we are planning a tour to promote the album and / or add it to the events that are already in my schedule. I'm just back from Argentina, doing some touring in Europe the next few weeks, afterwards going to Dubai, Panama and the USA.

We are just counting the votes for Top 100 Clubs. Tell us, what is your favourite club to play and why?

For almost 10 years it's been Zouk in Singapore for me - a great club that isn't to big or to small with a fantastic sound system and always a good, educated crowd.

Recently I have another club to add on my big favourite list as well: Privilege Buenos Aires, the club is not super special with mega lights, FX, sound system, decorations etc, but the crowd is insane!

Finally, what do you have coming up in the next few months?

I just released a track on Fedde Le Grand’s Flamingo Recordings called 'Walhalla' and the follow up for this track is called 'Bugaboo'. I am also working also on a great collab with vocals from Christian Burns and the next track on my own label In Charge is 'Hypergenic Supersonic Futuristic Monophonic' with a small video game to promote the song. So stay tuned for more updates soon!
