SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO REVEAL 'WHORL' DETAILS

British duo go live for latest LP

Analogue stalwarts Simian Mobile Disco have announced that their forthcoming album 'Whorl' will be released through Anti Records, home of Tom Waits and Kate Bush, on September 8th. The first single, 'Tangents', is out July 1st.

The LP, which uses sounds purely derived from two “suitcase-sized racks of modular synth gear”, was born from recordings taped live in the Southern California desert in front of a 900-strong audience of lucky fans.

Explaining just how their “live” ethic formed into the finished product, SMD's Jas Shaw said: “The system we're using has limited ability to save patterns in the sequencer, but nothing like the flexibility of a computer.”

“When we came to mixdown the album, we used portions of three sessions — the show itself, an extended jam we did in the desert the day before, and a little of our London studio rehearsal,” he continued.

Artwork for the album is provided by long-time SMD collaborators Jack Featherstone and Hans Lo. The pair built a custom oscilloscope-based hardware visual system to accompany the 'Whorl' performances, from which a still was taken for the LP cover.

The full 'Whorl' tracklisting is as follows:
01. 'Redshift'
02. 'Dandelion Spheres'
