SUNGLASSES REQUIRED

Pass him some shades: Michael Brun has a bright future. Here’s how the wunderkind is making the dance scene go Kid Coco-NUTS

Michael Brun is living the dream. At just 22-years-old he has played the main stage at Ultra Music Festival, closed out the dance-centric Sahara tent at Coachella and crafted official remixes for heavyweights Tiësto, Armin van Buuren and Calvin Harris.

Impressed? He’s just warming up. The Haitian-born producer recently brought another fantasy to fruition: launching his own record label, Kid Coconut. “I had thought about starting one since I first got into music,” he tells us in NYC, where he’s come to perform a live Sirius XM spot. “Luckily, some really great things fell into place and my team and I were able to make it happen.” As boss, he also gets to experiment on his own terms. “I really want to show range with the releases, especially different kinds of music that I enjoy or that have shaped my current sound.”

That sound, which he paints as “melodic and emotional, while still being energetic,” allows Brun to maintain a connection to his homeland. “Caribbean rhythms are probably the most direct influence to my productions,” he tells us. “I love the fact that with just a simple beat you can incite so many different emotions and feelings within people.”

Following the success of the label’s inaugural release, “Zenith,” Brun looks to stir such fervor with the next one, “Sun In Your Eyes,” a collaboration with Dutch Spinnin’ Records recruits DubVision and vocalist Tom Cane. Debuted by Brun during his Ultra set back in March, “Sun In Your Eyes” has a disposition as bright as the song-title suggests, matching euphoric builds with uplifting lyrics prime for festival sing-alongs.

As it turns out, The DubVision team-up was no impromptu schlock job. According to Brun, it has been years in the making. “We’ve been fans of each other’s work since 2012 and kept in touch through Twitter. Early last year they came to Miami and we were able to meet up in person and get a few days in the studio. We worked on a few different projects and ‘Sun In Your Eyes’ was one of them.” As “Sun In Your Eyes” sees its release on Kid Coconut this month, the friendship finally comes full circle.
