TOMORROWLAND DISPUTE

In the dance music industry, Tomorrowland is synonymous with a one-of-a-kind three day music festival that draws more than 150,000 revelers and the biggest DJ’s and electronic producers from around the world to Belgium - but Disney is now attempting to use the prominent festival name as the title for one of their upcoming movies.

Disney has recently released the much talked about trailer for ‘Tomorrowland: A World Beyond’, which features George Clooney and Hugh Laurie, causing quite a stir in the industry, with Disney, and festival promoter, ID&T, bumping heads on the legal use of the term Tomorrowland.

Disney and ID&T have an ongoing dispute regarding the title, which can be traced back during the initial expansion of the Tomorrowland brand in America, with Disney forcing ID&T to change its festival name to TomorrowWorld, as Disney had the term Tomorrowland registered as a trademark with the USA since the 1970’s.

Fast forward to the present time, the tables seemed to have turned, seeing that Disney’s premier of “Tomorrowland: A World Beyond” is to be released worldwide, ID&T are retaliating and attempting to stop the movie from being released in Netherlands, Luxemborg and Belgium. With ID&T owning rights to the term Tomorrowland in those countries, Disney will be facing legal trouble with airing their latest movies in those regions.

In true Disney fashion where anything is possible, they have gone on the release the trailer for the upcoming movie regardless of the impending legal action by ID&T.

It’s safe to say that Disney and the EDM community won’t be seeing eye to eye in the near future.
