After a slow drip feed of info about their new project, Native Instruments have announced the labels who are set to release music in their new Stems format. The list covers an impressive range, with a number of heavyweights balanced by some more boutique offerings from the company's homeland.
Toolroom, R&S, Mobilee, Nervous, 50 Weapons, Madtech, and Monkeytown are just a few of the names that have been sounded out to take part. Global music retail brands Beatport, Traxsource and Juno are also on board to distribute the tracks, which are packaged as standard MPEG-4 files so they can play as stereo mixes through all the usual formats including iTunes.
A development on Native Instruments Traktor software, Stems is an open, multi-channel audio file format that allows DJs to interact with a track’s different musical elements, giving access to four parts of a full mix: drums, bass, synths and vocals. Each stem can be controlled independently to create new mixes, instrumentals and acapellas in a live setting — you can watch a video demo of Stems in our tech section!
There's no official release date yet, with 'Summer 2015' being the only indication so far, however, the new Traktor Kontrol D2 deck comes 'Stems ready'.
