Killer Of The Month: Dusky 'Ordinary World EP'

A classy ode to the big room stylings of Underworld, Eric Prydz’s Cirez D alias and Slam, Dusky’s latest single ‘Parakeet Feet’ really packs a punch. Part of the ‘Ordinary World EP’ that’s set to drop via their own imprint, 17 Steps, the genre- hopping UK duo wade into previously uncharted water with their latest, self-released effort — it’s the kind of hypnotic techno slammer not previously seen from the pair.

Dusky’s largely house-focused output since 2012 has seen them rise to become one of dance’s best-loved duos, with cuts like ‘Flo Jam’ and ‘Love Taking Over’ being spun en masse in the UK and beyond. Techno, on the other hand, has always had a part to play in Dusky’s high-octane DJ sets, making it somewhat surprising that it’s taken them this long to craft an Underworld-esque anthem all of their own.

'Parakeet Feet’ kicks off in true ‘90s big room fashion — it’s underpinned by an incessant 4/4 lick that lollops alongside a barely distinguishable, chanting vocal (“Talk To Me”). Looping, dream-like synth work chimes in for maximum, reach-for-the-lasers effect come the one-minute mark before breaking down into a cacophony of lush, rolling drum-beats and crisp, technoid top lines.

A cut seemed destined for sunrise sets, ‘Parakeet Feet’ joins the ambient-influenced ‘Skin Deep’, mutant rave thumper ‘Jilted’ and quirky roller ‘Squeezer’ as part of Dusky’s forthcoming ‘Ordinary World EP’. A collection of expertly crafted tunes rooted in vintage influence, ‘Ordinary World’ might just be Dusky’s most seminal and dynamic work to date.
