Want to experience the exhilaration of a summer festival, while indulging your love for the mountains? Warm up this winter season with our guide to dance music’s best Ski & Snowboard festivals.
Not for the feint of heart, Snowbombing is perhaps the world’s most famous winter festival. Their reputation is built on ingenuity. Snowbombing is the only place you are likely to see Fatboy Slim DJ in an igloo, or Andy C turning an underground tennis court into an arena befitting of many a summer festival. The full-throttle event takes place in the famous Austrian ski resort of Mayrhofen, annually in March.
Rise is a relatively new addition to Europe’s ski & snowboard festival family. Taking place in the weeks leading up to Christmas at Les Deux Alpes, in France, Rise boasts a diverse line up which pairs the likes of techno luminary Seth Troxler with UK rapper Kano. Outside of the main arenas, there is plenty to take in. Our personal favourite is the ice disco rink, where you can skate away to disco classics.
While many of the festivals on this list favour a diverse music policy, often leaning towards bass music, Polaris is famous for slick sophisticated techno, which works perfectly in their stunning Verbier location. Richie Hawtin, Dixon, Luciano and Moodymann all performed at the last event. They’ll be back for more in December 2017.
Located in Andorra, South of Barcelona (where a rocking pre party takes place), Horizon brings together some of the biggest artists from the world of electronica and forward-thinking styles of bass and house music. Think Floating Points, Oneman, Ben UFO and KiNK, in a stunning ski resort, in mid April.
Now in their fourth year, Snowboxx will bring the noise to Avoriaz in France this March, courtesy of headline performances from Basement Jaxx, Wilkinson, Hannah Wants, Bicep and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man. Outside of the main events, Snowboxx has plenty to keep you coming back. From Karaoke gondolas to whisk you up the mountain, to vast, organised snowball fights, you can be sure never to have a dull moment.
