Hard One/Believe

Breakbeat from the Iberian peninsula has gained a rep for the worst kind of noisy, cheesy soundset in recent years, but Spanish production crew UFO here turn out by far their best release so far on the Stanton Warriors' irrepressible Punks imprint. 'Hard One' throws down ravey pitch-processed vocals, rough-house garage b-line action and searing sampled breaks, while 'Believe' sets out with diva vox, piano keys and classy strings before firing out the kind of bruising 808 sub and knock bass combo that Zinc himself might have been proud of. There's something in the water at Punks right now: every producer who releases on the label seems to be raising their game, and that can only be hugely exciting for the breakbeat scene as a whole.
