Premiere: Leila Samir ‘Anxiety’

Saudi Arabian musician and producer Leila Samir is up next on London’s More Time Records with the ‘No Music’ EP. Hear the intensely percussive techno cut, ‘Anxiety’ now

London’s More Time Records will release the debut EP from Saudi Arabian producer, musician and DJ Leila Samir this Friday 16th August.

‘No Music’ is a four track venture, which fuses traditional Saudi Arabian motifs and styles with heady elements of techno and club music. The title of the EP, as Samir explains, is intended as a nod to what she was told throughout her childhood growing up in a religious environment.

Having moved to London to study, Samir – who is also a jazz saxophonist – has gone on to DJ and host shows on stations including NTS and Worldwide FM, showcasing a wide range of styles from jazz and experimental Middle Eastern music to club-ready sounds.

‘No Music’ opens with the mesmerising ‘Bridal’, a dark and bassy cut which samples Saudi wedding music played on the oud, before launching into the cinematic, drum-led ‘Beginnings’.

‘Anxiety’ is the most fast-paced and dancefloor-ready track on the EP, with an intensely percussive foundation propping up the dark melodic chimes and surging bass. You can hear it below.

To mark the EP’s release, Leila Samir and More Time will be hosting a party this Friday (16th) in Peckham’s Rye Wax. Sets will come from OK Williams, Body Motion, Marcy b2b DJ Elliot, Zipporah, جيجي فم, More Time’s Ahadadream and SNØW, as well as Samir herself. More info about the party is available here
