Efdemin, Nene H, Oscar Mulero and Ahmet Sisman sample stones and raw materials from a former coal mine industrial complex in a new compilation series by The Ruhr Museum and Essen’s Third Room Collective. Hear Nene H’s ‘Aufprall’ now

A new project from The Ruhr Museum and the Third Room techno collective invites artists to sample the sounds of stones and raw materials from a former coal mine industrial complex in Essen, Germany.

The Ruhr Museum is located at Zollverein, an industrial complex turned UNESCO World Heritage site, which used to operate as one of the largest coal mines in the world, before being abandoned in the ‘80s. The site is now home to Mischanlage, an 800-capacity space run by Third Room, which has hosted numerous techno events in recent years.

The new project, titled Stone Techno Series, sees artists including Efdemin, Dax J, Nene H, Matrixxman, Rødhåd, Oscar Mulero, Jamaica Suk, Ahmet Sisman and more utilising a sample bank made of sounds of raw materials recorded in the complex. The sample bank is the brainchild of Dr. Achim Reisdorf (Geologist at the Ruhr Museum Foundation) and Kurt Gluck (Ohm Resistance), with the project being spread across four V/A EPs.

The first EP from the series, ‘Hexagonal’, will be released on 1st July, and features tracks from Berghain resident Efdemin, rising star Nene H, Spanish techno don Oscar Mulero and Third Room founder Ahmet Sisman.

You can hear Nene H’s rapid, rolling techno contribution to the compilation below. The Berlin-based, Istanbul-born DJ and producer announced her debut LP, ‘Ali’, last week, which will be released in July via Incienso.
