Play It Say It
The ever-reliable Richy Ahmed drop this two-track monster on Seth's equally dependable Play It Say It. 'Kimalya' is a hefty low-to-mid range tribal groove track. A trippy vocal holds your attention and the track pushes on percussively. It's hard not to love, expertly pieced together, fun to hear and will keep those feet dancing — plus gets hella' trippy in the middle. 'Come With Us' is as inviting as it sounds. More tribal percussion, slightly increased pace but a pulsing bass rhythm and leading synth line to intensify the whole journey. Though it isn't mentioned in the title, this EP is a certified double A-side for sure.
'An'dia/Love That I've Wasted'
Uniting with Toolroom for a second time this year, following on from his hit-single 'Kwalenga', Secondcity returns with double the trouble — 'An'dai'/'Love That I've Wasted'. Both relying on sampled, choppy vocal top-lines, and both musically able to cause dancefloor devastation. 'An'dia' is more emotive and percussive, whilst 'Love That I've Wasted' turns up the levels of funk, with main-room, peak-time impact in full effect.
Døob, Armie & Javi Green
'Deaf Humans EP'
Spanish imprint Clock Poets have made a stunning impression with this, their second EP, with Døob and Armie right back to it, joined by Javi Green. Three original works that supply mixed moods and textures. All are highly intricate percussive journeys that will carve some serious groove into the floor. London-based Rico Casazza switches the blueprint of 'Whales' for a steaming, deep house rework. Utterly delightful.
'For The Love Of Kaoz'
A workhorse, record bag essential from the Parisian maestro. Comprising four robust original's, DJ Deep's debut EP on Kaoz Theory is an impressive blend of textures and club-focused song arrangement. Opening with the tough percussion and kick-less 'Thai', moving into heavier territory on 'Tuesday Record Shopping In Paris'. 'Guardian', with distorted low-end and drum kit hats, brings a touch of funk to the surface before DJ Deep closes the EP with more percussive battery titled 'Cavalier Drums'.
Son of 8
'Hanging Out in The DJ Booth'
8 HOuse Records
This big-room house crossover duo have been swiftly rising the underground ranks this past 12 months. With this release, 'Hanging Out In The DJ Booth', they just might have eclipsed all previous releases to date. The original is a fierce, build-and-drop tech-house cut. Whilst Under No Illusion head honcho, Ki, reworks his to focus on a hypnotic, undulating bassline hook. Mark Jenkyns gets technical on the drums and low-end for a clattering remix. Havin' it large!
Surefire peak-time madness ensues 'pon the drop of Max's latest track 'La Fiesta'. With a chunky, tech-house bottom-end like this, he's creating a whole new legacy with the infectious, iconic 'La Candela Viva' vocal. Hot Creations' cohort, Luca Cazal, redacts the original into a trippy, zonal dub cut. Whilst New York house legend Todd Terry supplies a meaty, gut-wrenching remix. Hashtag fire emoji.
Do Not Sleep
The revered Music On resident displays his knack for the peak-time excellence here as he produces one of his best works to date. 'Pablo' utilises a grime-tinged vocal hook as the killer punch to the body-work-tech-house instrumental. This will get rinsed all summer long. Chilean talent, Francisco Allendes, then switches up the original with pace, some frantic percussive arrangement and a revitalised, choppy version of the vocal. It doesn't pip the original but offers a tip-top alternative. Leon completes the EP with the cleverly produced, off-kilter and low-slung tech-lectro (yep, that) 'I Got The Fire'.
Three very energetic house tracks come by way of rising Greek artist, Vangelis Kostoxenakis on Shadow Child's Food Music. Littered with tech sensibilities — nothing too serious — and incredibly infectious, the 'Talkback EP' is another sign why the likes of Moon Harbour, Elrow Music, Glasgow Underground and more have cosigned the man. 'Ubar' and the EP title track 'Talkback' are fine works that'll no doubt tear 'floors down, but its 'Breath', an absolute floor-stomper, with a shuddering bassline and swung tech-house drums that will leave you gasping for air.
