Burning Man applying for new 10-year permit for Black Rock Desert location
Festival must pass environmental impact assessment...
Burning Man is set to apply for a new permit granting permission to hold the festival in Black Rock Desert for the next 10 years.
The event has taken place in the same spot for the past 27 years, but from 2019 will once again need to renew its permit from the Bureau of Land Management.
Beginning in 2019 and taking over a year to complete, Burning Man will undergo an environmental impact evaluation — a document which as grown from a single page back in 1991, to 343 pages in 2012.
This will assess the impact on the land over the next decade if the festival remains the same, increases in size up to 100,000 people, or is cancelled altogether.
“Over the years our growth has been carefully planned, and it has helped ensure our cohesiveness and sustainability as an organization, an event and a culture,” say Burning Man in a statement.
“The playa is our home, and we want to ensure our ability to continue gathering there together each year.”
The festival prides itself on being a Leave No Trace event, making extra efforts to ensure it doesn't leave a lasting impact on the desert once it's finished for the year.
