Fatboy Slim wins Outstanding Contribution award at DJ Mag Best Of British awards ceremony 2018

Fatboy Slim was presented with the Outstanding Contribution award at DJ Mag’s annual Best Of British awards ceremony tonight (13th December). The incomparable Scottish author behind such titles as Trainspotting and ocassional DJ/producer Irvine Welsh was there to present the award of Outstanding Contribution to the UK stalwart and big beat legend. 

Brighton’s finest – real name Norman Cook – was there to collect the prestigious award, which celebrates his enduring influence on the UK dance music community and beyond.

In his Best Of British winners profile, Cook acknowledges how nice it is to receive such an award...

“Everyone likes getting awards — you’re a liar if you pretend you don’t,” he says. “Over the years I’m happy that I’ve made a significant contribution to the world of dance music. It’s something I’m quite proud of. I’m prone to over-modesty, but I’m quite proud of my part in the story of how we got from Frankie Knuckles to Calvin Harris — I joined some of the dots along the way.”

It was just one of numerous special moments to be witnessed at tonight’s ceremony, with a wide array of winners – voted for by DJ Mag readers – showcasing the vast and varied scene that the UK has to boast these days in terms of homegrown talent.

Drum & bass legend Andy C, for instance, has taken away the award for Best DJ while Birmingham native Rebekah has come out on top in our Best Producer category for her incendiary and inventive techno mastery.

In the Breakthrough DJ category, Manchester-native, London-based innovator WIllow came out on top while London upstart Harrison BDP won the title of Breakthrough Producer.

The poll – a celebration of UK talent  – is now in its 12th year. Positioned as a counter-balance to the global Top 100 DJs poll, Best Of British is our chance to shine a spotlight on the homegrown stars who fill the pages of our UK magazine each month.

The night also saw sets from nominees and winners in the poll including Rebekah, Eats Everything, James Zabiela, Breakwave, Jamz Supernova and femme culture.
