A five-part Tupac documentary is in the works

The series will explore the relationship between the rap legend and his mother

FX have announced a new Tupac documentary, Outlaw: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur.

The five-part series will examine the late rapper's relationship with his mother. Afeni Shakur, who passed away in 2016, was an author, activist and former member of the Black Panther Party.

According to a press release, Outlaw tells the story of “the most inspiring and dangerous mother-son duo in American history, whose unified message of freedom, equality, persecution and justice are more relevant today than ever.”

The series will be directed by Allen Hughes, who worked on HBO's documentary about Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, The Defiant Ones.

In July, a documentary about Wu-Tang Clan was nominated for an Emmy.
