A German teenager has been arrested on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack at an unnamed gay nightclub in Frankfurt.

The currently unidentified 17-year-old was apprehended after intelligence indicated he was plotting to attack an unnamed gay venue - as well as a Catholic church - in the city.

The suspect had instructions on how to make explosives and was attempting to procure chemicals online, Frankfurt prosecutors' spokesman Sinan Akdogan said. The investigation is ongoing.

Last month, it was revealed that terrorists who killed 15 people in two attacks in Barcelona in August last year researched music venues and festivals during their preparation.

It was recently confirmed that Asia's largest electronic music festival, Sunburn, was targetted for a terror attack by a far-right group last year.
