HUNDREDS ATTEND FUNERAL OF DJ DEREK, 'BRITAIN'S OLDEST DJ'
Massive Attack’s Daddy G was among those paying their last respects to the popular local figure
Hundreds of people turned out to pay tribute to Derek Serpell-Morris, better known as DJ Derek, at his funeral in Bristol last week.
Serpell-Morris went missing last July aged 73. His remains were discovered in March, following a months-long search.
Derek, a former accountant, was a well-known local figure, who played hundreds of sets in nearby pubs and clubs. One of the musical highlights of his 40-year career was DJing at Glastonbury.
During the memorial service, Gerald Serpell-Morris said his brother's "increasing fame amused him”. He described him as "kind, modest and unassuming".
Rev Liz Perry said the DJ “was a showstopper and his funeral was a showstopper."
Massive Attack member Daddy G was among those who attended the funeral. Derek had previously worked with the Bristol group and also once starred in a Dizzee Rascal video.
Fittingly, for a DJ who long championed Caribbean music, Bob Marley’s ‘One Love’ was played to close the service.
