M.I.A. to perform at ‘Don’t Extradite Assange’ protest in London

The event takes place tonight

M.I.A. will be perform at an event protesting the extradition of Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange, alongside rapper Lowkey.

The ‘Don’t Extradite Assange’ will take place at 6PM tonight (5th) outside the Home Office in London, in retaliation to the arrest of Assange earlier this year. He was arrested at the Ecudorian embassy in London in April, where he has claimed refuge for seven years to avoid extradition over a sexual assault case that has since been dropped. Assange was found guilty the same day of failing to surrender to Westminster Magistrate’s Court while facing US federal conspiracy charges, related to one of the largest ever leaks of government secrets.

With support from public figures following the arrest, M.I.A. wrote a letter in support of Assange, urging the world to “fast fix your system not hide him or the cracks he exposed.” In a tweet shared earlier today, the artist wrote "Later it could be u or me / I'm here for whatever sets truth free". She signed off the tweet simply saying "C u tonight 6pm outside the home office".

In the Queen's annual birthday honours list this year, Mathangi Arulpragasam, AKA M.I.A., was awarded an MBE for her services to music.
