Mixcloud wants to pay artists with a new "fan-to-creator" model.

Select, as the service has been named, will require listeners to pay a $2.99 monthly subscription fee, which will be used to fund licensing and pay the curator of the respective channel.

In return for their support, fans will be able to download mixes to listen offline and view tracklists before hitting play. Mixcloud's ID technology will track the rights holders of tunes played in each set, helping artists, publishers and labels secure additional revenue.

Currently the system has been rolled out across 47 channels, including some of the platform's biggest draws such as John Digweed, Nicole Moudaber, Eats Everything's Edible Beats and Red Light Radio. Other channel owners are invited to register interest in signing up

"We want to enable fans to get closer to the culture and communities they care about, while ensuring that everyone involved in the creative process is recognized and rewarded accordingly," a statement by Mixcloud cofounder Nick Perez reads.

Last year, Mixcloud announced a major deal with Warner Music, which it was believed would signify a new subscription-based era for the community. However, the official party line at the time suggested a one-size-fits-all flat fee would not be the preferred approach. Meanwhile, in other streaming news, Spotify just unveiled its most popular artists, songs and albums of 2018.
