Judy Russell, the co-founder of seminal New York labels Nu Groove and Downtown 161, has died. She was reportedly 63.
Ben Goldfarb, AKA DJ Scribe, shared the news via an Instagram post, writing that she "passed suddenly on Tuesday [July 2nd] after going into cardiac arrest just one day after being diagnosed with an advanced malignant tumor on her kidney".
He continues: "From the Paradise Garage to Vinylmania to Movin’ Records to Nu Groove to Downtown, she helped launch many careers & touched many lives with her sharp wit, humility & grumpy charm."
As a founder of Nu Groove and Downtown 161, Russell played a part in releasing seminal, early records from the likes of Frankie Bones, Bobby Konders, Masters At Work and The Burrell Brothers. Her work with both labels, as a distribution manager and further afield played a key role in the development of New York's house music scene from the '80s into the '90s.
