PECKHAM VENUE CANAVAN’S THREATENED BY PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT

Developer sumbits plans to build apartments and restaurant next door to the late-night pool hall

Canavan’s Pool Club is the latest Peckham venue to come under threat from nearby property redevelopment.

Plans have been submitted to Southwark council to redevelop the salvage yard at 190 Rye Lane, next door to the club. 2Gee Developments is proposing to build 22 apartments at the site, 17 of which will be sold at market rate with five being sold as “affordable housing”.

The architect in charge of the project, Collado Collins, claims that the positioning of the flat’s windows, which will overlook a courtyard garden, will “mitigate any sound issues”. 

Despite the assurances, Canavan’s owner Ciaran Canavan has started a petition to save the venue. In a statement accompanying the petition, Canavan writes: “While we work very closely with neighbours to minimise noise levels, this ill considered development would make collaboration impossible. Both the venue and Peckham Vision have made repeated efforts to consult developers to work out possible acoustic solutions have been ignored up to this point.”

The plans come a week after developers withdrew proposals to build luxury apartments adjacent to Peckham’s Bussey Building amid growing opposition to the development. 

Over the last few years, Canavan’s has been the home of Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section parties and played host to clubnights like Gateway To Zen.
