Ricardo Villalobos: "It’s not like you can become a DJ when you’re 20 because you think it’s cool"

Ricardo Villalobos recently sat down for an interview with The Guardian in which he talked about his long and successful career, being a father and the current state of dance music.

Before his recent gig at fabric, one idea he touched on was the need for passion in order to be a DJ.

“I’m a hyper-kinetic guy, I have a lot of energy – I can be a DJ even without drugs,” said Villalobos, “I’m a dancer and I don’t want to dance alone – this is why I DJ.”

Villalobos went further, saying, “People playing records have to be DJs their whole life. It’s not like you can become a DJ when you’re 20 because you think it’s cool. You are touched by it; you cry because of a rhythm. Me, I’m crying all the time.”

Obviously a nod to the current state of dance music and the meteoric rise of EDM stars, the Chilean-born DJ and producer held nothing back.

Now 47, the techno pioneer also mentioned he's looking to slow down and concentrate on his family.
