Skepta envisions a phoneless ‘future of rave’ at new immersive show
The grime artist has been staging experimental performances
Skepta has collaborated with Manchester International Festival (MIF) to stage a series of phoneless events.
The events, entitled Dystopia987, were the creative efforts of Skepta, creative studio TEM, who specialise in emerging technologies, and playwright Dawn King.
Accessible via an abandoned warehouse in Manchester and taking place in railway arches, the events were designed to replicate a journey into a dystopian, phoneless future using a combination of digital and physical objects.
Dystopia987 attendees were provided with headphones on entry to take part in activities while moving through the venue. The experience closed with a performance from Skepta accompanied by warped visuals, who shared with the crowd that social media didn't exist here and that "You're yourself, right here, together with everybody. Right here, now."
Last month, Skepta announced a UK and Ireland tour.
