TIDAL is testing a new DJ "sessions" feature

TIDAL is trialling a new feature which will allow subscribers to host live DJ "sessions" to other users of the streaming platform.

The new feature is currently exclusively available to US TIDAL subscribers on the platform's HiFi Plus plan, who have access to its Early Access beta testing programme. Users of the feature can play back music from TIDAL's catalogue of more than 90 million tracks, and allows others to join the session and listen collectively to the music as it's being played back live.

Under the current trial system, people tuning into the DJ sessions will only be able to listen to the music being played in standard AAC quality format. Those who are curating the selection, however, will be able to listen to the music they pick in whatever quality they choose.

TIDAL was founded in October of 2014 by Swedish company Aspiro, and was bought three months later by Jay Z's Project Panther Bidco company. It was then sold to Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey in May of 2021.

The platform has focused on providing subscribers with high fidelity audio streaming, with users able to stream music in both high quality MP3 and lossless formats.

Last November, a report shared by the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found that music streaming services are unlikely to make sufficient "excess profits" to improve paying artists.
