The future of Berlin nightclub Watergate could be in doubt, after the club’s landlord’s more than doubled the rent following the sale of the premises for €6.3 million.

In an interview owners have described the club as a victim of its own success, telling Resident Advisor and that it "inadvertently contributed to gentrification" in the area.

They also added that "in unbridled capitalism, the market regulates the price and there is no protection of business tenants or rental ceilings to counter this, [which] leaves the successful management of Watergate on very fragile terrain. In the end, we will all leave."

The club is celebrating 15 years in operation this year and is set to embark on an extensive world tour to celebrate the milestone. The club will visit Brazil, Russia, France, Morocco, Spain and more with sets from Solomun, Soul Clap and Hot Since 82.
