Will.i.am unveils $299 Bluetooth face mask with noise-cancelling headphones and LED lights

Wearable pandemic tech… for a price

Will.i.am has unveiled a new Bluetooth face mask, with features including noise-cancelling headphones and LED lights.

The “Xupermask” smart mask will cost $299, and is being presented by the Black Eyed Peas rapper and entrepreneur in partnership with tech company Honeywell.

The mask has been designed by Jose Fernandez, who created Elon Musk’s SpaceX suits. The smart mask also features dual 3-speed fans, HEPA filters, a microphone and a magnetic earbud docking system. It has a seven-hour battery life and can also play music and take calls.

“We are living in sci-fi times,” Will.i.am told the New York Times in an interview about the mask. “[The pandemic[] is straight out of a friggin’ movie. But we are wearing masks from yesterday’s movie. So I wanted to make a mask to fit the era that we’re in.”

You can see a preview of the Xupermask below, or if you have $299 lying around, you can purchase one via its website from 8th April.

It’s the latest development in wearable tech to be unveiled over the course of the pandemic. Last year, a “pandemic-proof rave suit” was designed by Los Angeles creative studio Production Club amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Earlier this year, will.i.am reached a settlement with DJ Lag, after the Black Eyed Peas star was accused of plagiarising the South African gqom star’s track, ‘Ice Drop’.
