Wonder Stories releases first compilation, ‘Wonder Buds Vol. 1’, Listen:
We chat with label head Aimes about their twentieth release and music that's 'different'...
Wonder Stories Records, a US-based label concentrating on ‘different’ house, techno and disco, has just released their first compilation in celebration of its twentieth release. Mostly made up of highlights from their earlier EPs, there’s also a handful of previously unreleased goodies to round out the compilation.
Producer/DJ Aimes heads the label, saying, “I originally started the label as an outlet for myself and my friends, and it’s pretty exciting that we’ve just hit our twentieth release. Our ethos has always been to be concentrate on left-field music that tickles the brain and doesn’t sound like everything else out there. Dance music can be sound homogeneous at times, so it’s important to put out music that’s doing something new, stuff that’s interesting to listen to on headphones, and still bangs in the club.”
Wonder Stories music is interesting indeed, and anything but par for the course. As the label continues its devotion to uncovering underground gems, the compilation is an excellent starting point to hear what the imprint is all about.
Past highlights include Pop District's psychedelic nu-disco take on Steve Cook’s ‘Notice Me’, DJ Rocca’s slow motion piano-chug rework of Aimes’ ‘Grandiose Visions’ (which was previously only available on vinyl), and William Earl’s spooky take on Perdido Key’s ‘I’m Free’.
Newly released cuts include Berlin-based Curses’ sleazy ‘Brains Bones Blood’, Man2.0’s acid remix of Concret’s Ritorno, and up-and-comers Owlson & Yssue’s ‘Espionage’.
Closing out the release is Aimes’ space disco adventure ‘Wonder Stories, the namesake for the label, originally released on his 2011 debut album ‘Your Floor is Now A Tree’.
