Q&A: MILLER SOUNDCLASH FINALIST FEELGOODSMALLS

With Miller Genuine Draft

Over the next few weeks we’ll be profiling the Miller SoundClash finalists; getting to know the DJs who will be flying to Las Vegas to compete for a chance to play alongside Dannic at Drais!

We begin with Canada’s representative, FeelGoodSmalls.

Hi FeelGoodSmalls, please introduce yourself to DJ Mag Readers

“I am DJ FeelGoodSmalls and I am from Toronto, Canada!”

Where did your love of music first come from?

“Music is a universal language and everyone has some form of love for it. Music is everything to me and I’m lucky enough to tap into this passion daily; my life revolves around it. My love of music has been a constant in my life and the joy of sharing it with others continues to evolve.”

How long have you been DJing?

“I have been DJ’ing for 4 years now.”

Do you produce music also?

“No, I do not produce music currently. I want to discover and learn more about the craft of DJing before I dive into making my own sound.”

What’s been the highlight of your career so far?

“I have had the opportunity to DJ outside of my country, including a month long tour in China. I played in 3 different cities alongside many if China’s top DJs”

Tell us about the success as a DJ you’ve had in your own country.

“Back in Canada, I mainly play locally in Toronto clubs and venues. I am also a DJ for Nike Women; travelling with them to DJ events and work-outs across Canada. I have a strong belief in the use of music as a motivator in all facets of life.”

How does it feel to win your local Miller SoundClash competition?

“To win this competition and be representing Canada in the World Finals is an amazing opportunity. As of now it still doesn’t even feel real, I am just so thrilled to have had the opportunity to share my true passion for music and my awesome dance moves with the people of my city.”

How much does it mean to you to have made it to this stage of Miller SoundClash?

“This is a game changer for me; to travel to the EDM capital to perform is pretty surreal. Once I get to Vegas I may never come back...”

How do you plan to stand out over the other DJs in Las Vegas? How will you be preparing for the finale?

“The energy that I bring to a crowd is what makes me stand out in Canada, I plan to give the same energy and attention to the Vegas crowd. When I get on stage it is impossible for me not to have a good time and it shows. Leading up to the finale, I will continue to fine tune my individual sound and develop my craft as a turntablist.”

What makes you unique compared to the other international finalists?

“Everyone in the competition is from a different country, which already makes each of us unique from one another. I am committed to sharing my style and sound with the Vegas crowd vs playing what I think they would want to hear. Playing from the heart will set me apart from the other finalists.”

Las Vegas is the EDM capital of the USA, with major DJs playing every weekend. If you could meet and hang out with one of these DJs in Vegas, who would it be and why?

“Diplo, hands down! There is something about his energy when he performs that is completely addicting. I feel we would vibe well together and his music is right up my alley. Being Canadian I also wouldn’t be able to resist seeing A-Trak; he is a turntable legend and someone that I have always looked up to as a DJ.”

How important is it for competitions like Miller SoundClash to give aspiring DJs the chance to show their talent to the world?

“Our world is full of DJs now — In Canada it seems like everyone is a DJ. This competition allows for those with talent to overcome the barriers that many DJs face. It is not about who you know, it is about how you perform.”

Tell us a bit about your home country - how is the electronic music scene where you are from?

“Electronic music is huge in Canada. It seems like festivals keep popping up daily with big name line-ups. In Toronto we have a huge underground dance music scene, which is where a large portion of our talent hangs out.”
