Author reads from Britpop-era book
The latest music industry-centred film to hit the box office is Kill Your Friends, set around the height of Britpop and dubbed “this generation’s American Psycho”.
Based on the novel by John Niven, the film tells the tale of a 27-year-old A&R fuelled by greed and drugs, slashing his way through the music industry in 1997.
"What is depicted in Kill Your Friends is what happens when ambition, pure ambition, achieves primacy over any values, or talent,” Niven has said.
The new dark comedy blockbuster, which is out today and sees Nicholas Hoult as the lead, boasts a killer soundtrack from artists such as The Prodigy, Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Radiohead, and has gained support from industry heavyweights including Ed Simons of The Chemical Brothers.
John Niven has done a reading of his favourite passage from the book, exclusively for DJ Mag TV — which hones in on the fickle nature of the industry for aspiring musicians and gives a tantalising glimpse of what to expect from the film.
