BOB 2015: GREG WILSON (INDUSTRY ICON)

Best of British 2015, educated by Point Blank

THE DISCO DADDIO
We decided to give Greg Wilson the Industry Icon gong this year for services to disco over many years, over and above the call of duty...

“Having experienced periods of obscurity in my life, especially during the nineties as superstar DJ culture was swigging the champagne of its success — whilst I was left to ponder that world-weary question, ‘where did it all go wrong?’ — it’s an extremely satisfying feeling to know that your work is appreciated by others, be that via individual feedback or an industry award such as this,” Greg Wilson tells DJ Mag, rather eloquently.

We've just told him the good news — DJ Mag has awarded the much-loved Manchester DJ this year's Industry Icon gong at our Best Of British awards, and he seems, well, rather chuffed. "Thanks to DJ Magazine for the acknowledgement of my efforts to date — I’ll endeavour to build on these during the next phase of my work, both from a DJ standpoint and with my record label hat on,” he says cheerfully down the phone-line.

Said label, Super Weird Substance, only launched back in June, but has taken up a lot of Wilson’s 2016 calendar. It was created as a place to house remixes, edits and originals from Wilson, as well as several collaborators, with the producer dropping label compilation ‘Greg Wilson presents Super Weird Substance’ at the close of 2015.

Aside from producing and DJing all over globe, Greg has remained active on the editorial front in the last 12 months, penning articles for his two blogs (Electro Funk Roots and gregwilson.com), plus bits for Boiler Room and Clash. It's something he's particularly passionate about, adding that he's keen to keep “sharing bits of knowledge/information I may have acquired over the years”.

As one of the UK's foremost experts on electro and disco, Wilson has been entertaining fans for over (gasp!) four decades, adding: “Peace and love going out to everyone who’s danced at a club or festival I’ve played at, enjoyed one of my records, listened to one of my mixes, read something I’ve written, and otherwise connected with my musical odyssey of these past 40 years.”
