WEEKEND GETAWAY: ELECTRIC PARADISE IN PUNTA CANA

Get out of town...

New Year’s comes early to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic via Electric Paradise. This Saturday, the 19th of December, for one night only, 30 of dance music’s elite converge on the beaches of Playa Juanillo in Cap Cana to throw a hedonistic party that is sure to put subsequent year-end events — in any location — to shame. Lined up along the Caribbean Sea, right on the beach, the five areas of the festival, including three stages, host a genuinely diverse cross-section of talent guaranteed to keep the groove flowing from mid-afternoon late into the evening.

Among the performers are party commander Diplo as well as his über-project Major Lazer, Chromeo’s high-end pop stylings, Gorgon City and its perfectly curated DJ set plus live vocals, Hot Since 82’s fiery house, Cashmere Cat’s feline movements, and Nicolas Jaar, the thinking man/woman’s dance artist. And once you scratch the surface with those performers you’ll find jumbotron EDM names such as Skrillex, Martin Garrix, Porter Robinson, Steve Angello, and Guy Gerber, who are balanced by the 10% of women represented: festival favorite Anna Lunoe, plus the equally exciting Nastia and Magdalena, and the not-to-be-missed AlunaGeorge.

Unlike other high profile festivals, Electric Paradise chooses quality, sculpted sounds over being bashed about the head, a move fitting of its heavenly location.
