SYDNEY TO OVERTURN ALCOHOL BAN IN 62 ZONES
Authorities are set to loosen restrictions on public drinking in certain areas of the city
Sydney is planning to lift bans on public alcohol consumption in a number of areas of the city.
The Daily Telegraph reports that Lord Mayor Clover Moore has proposed relaxing restrictions on 62 alcohol-free zones, mostly in the suburbs of Darlinghurst, Newtown, Surry Hills, Redfern, Waterloo, Alexandria, Erskineville and Rosebury.
Councillors will vote on the move next week, after Moore issued a review of the legislation in February.
Over the last seven years, Sydney City Council has increased the number of alcohol-free zones from 149 to 400.
The decision to loosen the ban in some parts of the city comes amid news that the Baird government is reconsidering its controversial lockout laws. Deputy Premier Troy Grant will reportedly host a meeting on Thursday night with nightclub owners to hear their grievances.
Last month, thousands marched through Sydney to protest the city’s lockout laws.
