MUSIC STREAMING IS DRIVING SALES OF VINYL

New research suggests that vinyl sales are boosted by streaming

Music streaming sites are partly responsible for the rise in vinyl sales, new research suggests.

In a survey conducted by ICM, half of consumers said they listened to an album online before buying a vinyl copy of it, reports the BBC.

The trend is more prevalent among those using ad-supported services like SoundCloud or YouTube, raising the possibility that free music can drive real-world sales.

However, 48% of people who bought vinyl last month said that they have yet to play their newly-purchased record.

Forty-one per cent of those surveyed said they don’t use their turntable, while 7% said they don’t own one.

The majority of vinyl buyers are between the ages of 25-34, the poll revealed. The second biggest age group are 35-44 year-olds.

Sales of vinyl records have been rising year-on-year since 2006. Official Charts Company figures suggest the rise has continued in 2016, with 637,056 records sold in the first three months of the year.
