DJ MAG IBIZA GETS TO KNOW ALICE CLARK

Rising star Alice Clark knows her way around Ibiza. She’s lived on the island since she was 17, spending her time in the studio during the winter and playing non-stop gigs throughout the warmer months. 

She cites her influences as Carl Craig, Derrick May, Deetron and KiNK, the latter inspiring her to learn to produce and make music on the fly with her own live set-up. After years of grafting on the White Isle, the young producer’s hard work is now starting to pay off — she recently landed a prestigious residency at Sankeys Ibiza, as well as spinning at the Do Not Sleep pre-parties at Space with Darius Syrossian, Nick Curly and Mirko De Florido throughout the summer. 

She also counts Marco Carola, Luciano, Paco Osuna and Joseph Capriati as fans. DJ Mag Ibiza catches up with her to talk her top island spots, learning to produce and how to look good in post-club photographs... 

You’re an Ibiza local, tell us a few secret spots on the island?
“Benirrás Beach is a favourite for me. I’m not a spiritual person but there is definitely a great energy down there. Especially on Sundays, when they have the drummers play at sunset. 
“Hostal La Torre is also amazing. In my opinion it’s the best place to watch the sunset on the whole island.

"I have been going there religiously over the last year or so, even over the winter as it’s open all year round. It just has this stillness that you just don’t find at any other place in Ibiza. It can get frantic here in the summer as you can imagine with the long hot days, balancing gigs and going from party to party — you can recover here in bliss!”

You built your first studio just 18 months ago, tell us some of the artists that inspired you to start producing?
“KiNK was a big inspiration for me. I used to watch a lot of his live sets on Boiler Room videos online before I got into producing properly and just got hooked. He makes everything look so effortless, and his sound really resonates with me too.

"I secretly think he was a wizard in another life. Funnily enough, I got to jam with him live when he was at Sankeys Awakens opening party this year. It was an awesome experience to be able to play live with him and geek-out over his set-up, and even pick up some tips.

“I want to eventually branch out into doing live shows myself. I remember the first time I heard some of Deetron’s records when I first started DJing at Fabric when I was 17. I immediately started to do some digging to find out more about him and I came across an interview he did where he was showing his amazing analogue studio set-up. His tracks have such a richness, and feeling. It got me thinking – ‘I need to do this’.  I wanted to learn how to do it for myself, so I did.”

Tell us your five essentials for Ibiza rookies?
“Number one, a fully charged phone. Mainly to be used to ring and text your mates all night trying to find where they are in the club because you have lost them for six hours. Secondly, wear comfortable shoes so you can dance all night without having to complain about your blisters.

"Third, bring a fan so you don’t get too hot and sweaty. I’ve learnt that the hard way by seeing the morning-after pictures where it looks like your face is one big shine. Fourth, never leave home without your spot on the guest list, or at least a ticket to get in.

"That’s a rookie error if you turn up and can’t get into the club. Lastly, don’t  forget a big wedge of cash because drinks prices can be crazy, and you will be dying for a drink at 6am when you have danced off a week’s calories in a few hours.”
