12 TRACKS THAT CHART THE HISTORY OF SNEAKY PETE'S

Club's owner chooses 12 tracks ahead of hosting a stage at Electric Fields...

Ahead of hosting a festival stage at this year’s Electric Fields, the main man behind Scottish clubbing institution Sneaky Pete’s has selected twelve tracks for DJ Mag that charts the club’s history.

Sneaky Pete’s Electric Field's stage line-up features club favourites Erol Alkan, Joy Orbison, Factory Floor, as well as fresh faces like Denis Sulta, Eclair Fifi and many more. “We’ve always been lucky to have such amazing DJs play the club,” explains Sneaky Pete’s owner Nick Stewart to DJ Mag.

“At just 100 capacity it’s really an anomaly to be so well known. The residents, guys like the Soul Jam and Juice crews, have been able to create such a consistently good atmosphere that it’s easy for guests to come down and know that they have the support of the crowd to play from the heart. All the DJs below have played multiple shows for us and we hope to have all of them back again."

Check out the complete list below!

'Drone Logic 2'
Daniel Avery
Phantasy
2013
"Back in our first or second year, one of the Filthy Dukes couldn’t make it here to play, so a guy called Daniel Avery filled in. He’s played for us once or twice a year since then, we are really proud of him and where he’s got to, and he’s been the connect to Phantasy, one of our favourite labels."

'A Hold On Love'
Erol Alkan
Phantasy
2013
"On Daniel’s recommendation, Erol Alkan has played semi-regular shows for us for a few years now. I’ve been a huge fan of his since he ran Trash at The End in the mid 2000s. When I started the club 8 years ago I thought the high point we could reach one day was to have him play, but now he’s a genuine friend of the venue."

'Sicko Cell'
Joy Orbison
Swamp 81
2012
"Joy Orbison is another guest we never thought we’d get, but he’s now really tight with the Juice crew, Hi & Saberhagen in particular, and has played out their tunes on tour and on the radio."

'Why Go To War'
JD Twitch vs William Onyeabor
Luaka Pop
2014
Popular opinion for years was that Glasgow was where it was at and Edinburgh was way behind. But after Optimo’s JD Twitch declared a particularly sweaty show here “the best fun I’ve had in Edinburgh this millennium” we had an idea that Edinburgh’s crowds were really getting behind good music, just when Glasgow was getting really laddish, Edinburgh was getting savvy.

'Very First Breath'
Hudson Mohawke
WARP
2015
"Jackmaster and Dom from LuckyMe had a chat one day years ago that they’d be up for having a 'rammy' here. Well it’s certainly the place for it, and we have to thank those labels for putting us on the map with their residences here. LuckyMe still run shows here. Hudson Mohawke terminally blowing the bass bins was a memorably expensive event, and Ben UFO sharing the decks with Rustie was one of the most magically odd pairings we’ve had."

'It’s Only Real'
Denis Sulta
Numbers
2015
"Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, the DJs who run the label, had a residency here throughout 2015 and we still bring them back now and again. They can do anything at the decks, they are fearless, but also hilarious - those guys have some dark chat! Denis Sulta is probably the leading name on the label."

'Two Different Ways'
Factory Floor
DFA RECORDS
2011
"Factory Floor had to cancel their Wasabi Disco show first time round. It took three years to finally reschedule and when Gabe Gurnsey finally plugged all his analogue gear direct to the PA the raw power of his set was mind-blowing."

'Trip Isolator (Original Mix)'
Young Marco
ESP Institute
2014
"Frequent flyer Young Marco is sincerely the best selector in the game. - he’s not tied to a genre, his records come from all ages, he has a way of making people dance euphorically to essentially really weird records, he’s not too well known here but you can hear why he’s such an important figure amongst the Rush Hour and Red Light Radio crews."

'Fighting Is Futile'
Matthew Dear
Ghostly International
2012
"Matthew Dear’s live band is unreal, they played two mind-blowing shows for us - including a 20 minute earthshaking version of Don & Sherri."

'Happy House'
The Juan Maclean
DFA Records
2008
"The Juan Maclean played live for us and came back to DJ too. On stage with Nancy Whang, going wild with a theremin, tearing out a 25 minute version of Happy House was one of the defining early shows for the club that no one there will forget."

'Oh Boy'
CamRon (Produced By Just Blaze)
Roc A Fella Records
2002
"One of the most important hip-hop producers, Just Blaze, has somehow come to be an annual visitor to the club. That a guy behind hits for Jay-Z and Kanye will come to a 100 cap club and give 200% energy is pretty astounding. The response - crowd surfing, neighbourhood waking cheering, was well earned."

'Crash The Box'
Bill Brewster & Mang Dynasty
Unsigned
2015
"You know you’ve got somewhere when the guy who wrote the book on dance music is a resident! Bill Brewster who penned 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life’ and ‘How To DJ (Properly)’ is a funny, cool and suave. A real OG and a great DJ."
