DJmag revs up for the last blow-out of the summer

By the time September comes around, with the collage of sun-scorched memories already getting a bit hazy, the sinking feeling as summer draws to a close has already set in. But just before you hang up your shades and shelve your wellies for another year, the existence of one glorious event always keeps the hope alive, sitting on the horizon like a blazing beacon of festival joy. Come grey skies, sloppy mud or torrential rain, every year without fail, Bestival (8th-12th September) is always the ultimate end-of-summer blow-out. Sure-fire proof people dance harder when they know something’s about to finish.

But it is not just that Bestival is the final curtain to a summer of UK festival raving that makes the vibe so special. Always hooked on an imaginative fancy dress theme — last year was Year of the Fantastic — and hell-bent on pushing the boundaries of supernatural festival pyrotechnics beyond belief, each time around, the creative minds behind the event ensure festival goers are transported, over that bizarre stretch of water off the English mainland, to a weird and wonderful world in which the only responsibility is to get off your rocker to a wild concoction of beats, bands and bass. So what’s Bestival’s secret? Let’s be honest, it’s a national treasure...

“Well, it’s nice of you to say that, but you’re only as good as your last show and we always strive to better the last one,” Bestival founder and Sunday Best label headman, Rob Da Bank tells DJmag. “I wouldn’t like to say, but I suppose it’s our mix of music, magic and mayhem, all set in a lovely environment.”

With this year’s theme, Pop Stars, Rock Stars and Divas, set to unleash hordes of Beyonce-loving, Gaga-obsessed satirists and moustachioed Freddy Mercurys hovering in fishnet tights over the bushy green climes of The Isle Of Wight, plus a line-up boasting The Cure, Björk, Brian Wilson and Public Enemy topping a roster that balances upstart underground starlets such as SBTRKT, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Julio Bashmore with more established names on the electronic circuit like Modeselektor, Claude Von Stroke and Norman Jay. This year promises to be bigger, better and more spectacular than ever. And not only because of the line-up: there’ll be a roller disco, the appearance of new soundsystems — Rinse, Hyperdub, Digital Soundboy and Modular — plus an inaugural Ambient Forest and Swamp Shack. Simply the Best(ival)!
