Trance superstar DJ Tiësto was admitted to hospital recently with heart problems.

The Dutch DJ has developed a condition known as pericarditus, which is an adverse accumulation of fluid surrounding the heart.

However, doctors are confident that Tiësto will make a full recovery aided with medication and plenty of rest.

Prime Time Management BV, who manage Tiësto's bookings, put out a statement on the DJ's website.

"At this date it is uncertain how long it will take for Tiësto to recuperate," they said.

"He will be kept at the hospital for a couple of days for further testing and rest.

"Aside from the pain in his chest he is feeling fine and is fully confident that he will be back to work soon."

As a result of his condition, the DJ had to cancel a leg of his high-profile North American tour and a tour of Norway.

He may still have to cancel further dates, depending on his recovery.

There are many different types of pericaditus, including acute, cardiac and constructive.

When pericardia occurs it fills the pericardium (a sac surrounding the heart) with fluid and the heart cannot beat properly because it has no room to expand.

This can lead to an irregular heartbeat.
